What clearing a drain costs.

The cheapest call on this site, and the one most likely to turn into a bigger conversation if the wrong drain is slow.

The number, up front

Snaking a single fixture or branch line typically runs $150 to $350 in the East Valley. That price assumes an accessible cleanout and one blocked line. If every drain in the house is slow at once, that’s the main sewer line rather than a fixture, and it’s a different job at a different price. One that should start with a camera, not a cable.

Range compiled 2026-08-21 from published Phoenix-metro plumbing price guides (plumbingpriceguide.com/phoenix-plumbing-cost, phoenixplumbingauthority.com, desertrainplumbing.com, plumbingphoenixpros.com). Typical installed range for ordinary residential work, not a quote, and not a promise about your house.

One drain slow versus every drain slow

This is the distinction that decides your price, and you can make it yourself in two minutes. One slow fixture is a clog in that fixture's trap or branch, and it’s a cheap visit. Every drain slow at once (toilets gurgling when the washer drains, water rising in a tub when a sink runs) means the problem is downstream of all of them, in the main. Stop plunging individual drains at that point. You’re working on the wrong end of the house.

Why a cheap snake sometimes costs more

A cable machine makes a hole through a blockage. It doesn’t remove the grease ring or scale on the pipe wall, which is why a snaked kitchen line frequently backs up again within months. Paying $200 three times in a year to avoid paying once for jetting is a bad trade, and the second callback is the moment to ask about it rather than snaking again.

The older-house caveat

In the older parts of the valley the sewer laterals are the original material and the trees above them have had decades to find the joints. A recurring main-line backup there’s a root question, and the answer comes from a camera. On an older line, camera before cable isn’t upselling. It’s the sequence that stops you paying for the same clearing every spring.

The range assumes we can reach a cleanout. No cleanout means pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent, and that’s labor. It also assumes the line is blocked rather than broken, which is a different job and a different number. Nights and weekends cost more.

What moves the number

What moves it inside the range.

Mostly access, and whether it’s really a clog.

Is there a cleanout, and can they reach it

An accessible exterior cleanout is a fast job. No cleanout means pulling a toilet or going through a roof vent, and that’s labor.

Which line

A bathroom sink and the main sewer aren’t the same job even though both get called drain cleaning.

Is it actually a clog

Roots, a belly holding water, or a break all present as a slow drain and none of them is cleared with a cable.

How many times you’ve done this

A first-time clog is a clog. The third one in a year is a diagnosis waiting to happen.

Hour of the day

A single slow drain isn’t an emergency. Paying an after-hours premium for one is money set on fire.

Questions about the price

Answers, not a brochure.

Do chemical drain openers work?

Sometimes on hair and soap in a fixture branch. Essentially never on roots, grease in a main, or a break. On an older line they can also leave a caustic pool for whoever opens the pipe next, which doesn’t improve anyone's day. If a bottle hasn’t fixed it, stop buying bottles.

Is the drain cleaning guaranteed?

Many contractors warranty a clearing for a set window: ask what theirs is and get it in writing. A contractor who won’t warranty a clearing at all is telling you they suspect the problem isn’t a clog.

Or just call. Answered any hour.

One slow drain can wait for morning. Every drain slow at once shouldn’t.
